Anthadd, P.I.: Casey Bat
After a suggestion from Tomato on the fora in a topic on the EarthBound / EarthBound Zero forum, wherein he recommended I do an article on the Casey bat, I took his suggestion. This article will deal with the changes made to the Casey bat.
As Tomato's Mother 2 to EarthBound and Back Again... site will inform you, the Casey bat was not as "special" in Mother 2 as it was in EarthBound. It still had that 1 in 4 hit rate, but the name didn't subtly hint at it.
You still get it from the enhanced Master Belch. However, in this case, he isn't Master Barf. He's something like "Rather Effected Geppu (or Belch, depending on how you look at it)". The battle proceeds the same way: after you inflict a specific amount of damage, Poo swoops in and uses Starstorm Alpha.
The interesting thing is the name given the bat in Mother 2. In EarthBound, the name suggests there's more to it than meets the eye. One might be reminded of the old poem "Casey at the Bat" when considering the name of the bat. However, in Mother 2, the name is different. It is called the "kata ni chikara bat". Literally translated, it's the "power in excess bat". Personally, I prefer to call it the "Excessive Power Bat".
As Tomato has said on Mother 2 to EarthBound and Back Again..., the Casey bat has a regular name and description in Mother 2. However, the description does warn of the high miss rate. The description reads as follows: "(Ness) can equip this weapon. There's a lot of power in its swing. Be careful." I understand the translation needs work, especially at the end, but that's the gist of it. Compare that to the EarthBound description, where it says you might whiff. In Mother 2, it tells you to be careful.
