EarthBound's Fans
Well, here we go again. I said I would write another article and what do you know? I wrote another article. This time I am going to speak about us, the fans. If you just look at the "official" stuff, Earthbound is not a big franchise. There were two games, one never released in the U.S., and a small appearance by Ness in Super Smash Brothers. But, when you look into the fan work, it is an huge franchise, with hundreds of websites, including a special one that is THE Earthbound site (EB.net). Thanks to some very good people, we now have the first Mother (set before Earthbound) available throughout the web. And now, people are beginning to develop their own games based on Earthbound. I've heard of games ranging from racing to first-person shooter to Arakanoid-type games (which by the way, can be downloaded now). If the fans work together, they could put together a special collection of Earthbound games that could be available on the web.
Wait, strike that. I have an incredible idea (I am full of them). Suppose that, after making a special Anthology of computer games that had been tested for bugs and approved, then we asked Nintendo if they would like to publish them as a computer game. If we didn't demand any (or just a small amount of) money, then their profit potential would be incredible. The games would have already been built, so they would just have to tweek a few things to have it ready, and they probably wouldn't have to pay much to us designers, yet could still, with proper marketing, make a huge profit and possibly stimulate the production of EB64! Whew, that was a long sentence. I think I will stop here. Let me know what you think of this idea at [email protected].
