The Key is the Writing
In the beginning, there was the Word. And the Word was God.
It's been known throughout time that the basis of an advanced civilization is the ability to have the written word. A lot of things are based solely on the writing. Novelist are one of the highest paid entertainer artists in the world. The Chinese are considered greats in the idea of writing, with their pictorial characterizations of word. The Egyptians created paper scrolls for writing. William Shakespeare is revered as one of the greatest people of all time. With that, a lot of entertainment cannot be created without a writing taskforce behind it. This is an article about the writing in Earthbound.
As you play through Earthbound, there are the funny images, the great music, and the funny sound effects, but like most RPGs, it is a read and respond type of game. The thing that's kept Earthbound so alive, I think, is the writing. The names of places, the names of objects, the responses after a monster dies. Everyone quotes Earthbound lines once in a while in #earthbound. The clever lines first thought of in Japanese, then tweaked into its funny glory, is what made Earthbound so appealing to begin with. Imagine going through the game, and the dialogue being mediocre. Imagine if the cheezy one liners were gone. Imagine if the profound and moving monologues at the Tea and Coffee screens were gone. Think what would happen if all the character building in the minor extras who are simply there for your entertainment was nothing more than "Sorry, Our Princess is in Another Castle" or "Fair Gwendolyn, Dragon Warrior will you get her pleas."?
Now, next time you play the game, think about what's keeping you interested. The story line? That was written out and polished. The names of things? Written. That dialogue that pulls you in, makes you life, and actually feel for these pixilated things? All a matter of sitting down and writing.
One of the biggest accomplishment of Tomato-San's PK Hack was finding the Earthbound Script.
What I think would be great, is if you have an idea, please write it down. Good ideas aren't meant to swim around in your head and be forgotten. They are for the world. Who knows, you may be remembered for it, and have a whole internet community based off of YOUR idea.
Do it FOR THE WORLD!
